The Battle for New York: Right vs. Left

Two US House Republicans, Congressman Randy Fine of Florida and Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who are close to Donald Trump, are demanding an investigation into the path to citizenship of the newly elected Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani.

Since June 2025, Congressman Ogles has been pushing the Justice Department to investigate Mamdani, calling for his deportation on the claim that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), to which Mamdani belongs, is a communist organization that he did not disclose during his naturalization process.

In response, Mamdani said, “In a moment where Americans across the country are deeply fearful of whether they can afford the basic dignities of life, be it healthcare, be it groceries, be it their rent, the focus of the Republican Party is to try and denaturalize the Muslim guy that won the New York City Democratic primary with the most votes in our city’s history?”

New York is a hardcore Democratic blue state with a large working-class population. Free public services, affordable healthcare, housing, and education attract the working class living in New York. This gives political candidates who raise such issues a strong chance of winning, as Mamdani did by advocating for affordable housing.

The growing tendency of supporting for immigration and anti-immigration sentiment has now deeply polarized US domestic politics along ethnic and religious lines, such as Christian/Jewish versus Muslim.

In the Western world, especially in major cities like New York, London, or Paris, far-right movements are gaining ground against immigrants, particularly Muslims. From a Muslim perspective, this is termed as “Islamophobia”, whereas many white conservatives describe it as safeguarding Europe and the US from what they perceive as “invaders” in the form of immigrants.
