The UK Foreign Secretary stated that, due to budget cuts, UK Aid will have to limit its program funding support to schools and clinics in some of the world’s poorest countries. According to the source, the UK’s bilateral aid to African countries will be almost 900 million pounds by 2028-29. This represents a 56% cut. This amount will be transferred to the UK’s defense spending.
The analyst has warned that the UK’s funding cuts to the world’s poorest countries will impact its reputation. Further, G7 countries will reduce their aid support. In this context, UK Labour MPs have been expressing skepticism that the cuts have done much to achieve the desired attention and doubt that they will bolster UK military spending. MPs are privately expressing this because of the long delay in the UK defense investment plan.
Last year, MPs voted to reduce UK aid by 40%. The majority of UK Aid will now focus on war zones like Palestine, Sudan, and Ukraine.
According to the UK Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, the cuts will affect countries like Afghanistan, Somalia, and Yemen. Although Cooper stated that these countries will still receive funding from multinational aid agencies.
Pakistan and Mozambique will come under the UK partnership for investment, replacing development aid.
The CEO of Bond, the UK network for NGOs, Romilly Greenhill, said that regions like Africa and the Middle East will be forced to pay the highest price because of this reduced UK development aid.
The UK’s bilateral overseas development aid to Africa will fall from 818 million pounds in 2026 to 677 million pounds by 2029. The FCDO said that the initiatives will pivot to multilateral contributions through the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
