In Iran’s recent protest, more than 200 protesters have lost their lives resulting to demonstrations gone viral across the country. The people are coming out in massive numbers to march in street against rising inflation and unemployment. The unrest has seriously challenged the Islamic Republic, which was set up in 1979. Analysts state that this ongoing protest is one of the biggest masses seen in Iran’s recent history.
Underlining this development, U.S. newspapers report that President Trump is considering a military strike on Iran after being briefed by White House officials. The White House referred to President Trump’s public comments on social media: “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,” Mr. Trump wrote on Saturday. “The USA stands ready to help!!!”
US-Iran relations have taken even a nosedive after the U. S. pulled out of the JCPOA in 2018. Israel is also very much against Iran’s Uranium enrichment program and has been constantly pressuring the US to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Europeans, on the other hand, remain optimistic about the JCPOA, arguing that it could legitimately limit Iran’s uranium enrichment program below weapons-grade levels.
This demonstration, which started in December, have also been endorsed by the exiled former prince Pahlavi, who has urged people to go out into the streets. To this, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, affirmed on Friday that the government would not back down even in the face of large, scale protests.
