Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah has been widely covered in Indian media outlets, including the Op-ed section. The analysis made in outlets like ThePrint, Deccan Chronicle, and The Times of India has interpreted his rise as more than a domestic political shift. Indian analysts have interpreted this as a turning point in Nepal’s political structure with regional implications.

In one of the media outlets, ThePrint has stated that Balen’s emergence signals the decline of Nepal’s traditional party system. Most Indian analysts argue that his support base is largely youth-driven and mobilized through social media. They further stated that this new social media force in Nepal has limited experience in engaging with India and had urged the Indian government to recalibrate its diplomatic approach. They have suggested India to move beyond legacy political networks.

The editorial of Deccan Chronicle described Balen Shah as a “figure of change, ” reflecting people’s anger at the political class and their desire for clean governance.

On the other hand, The Times of India took a different perspective by focusing on Nepal-India relations. The analysis pointed out the concerns raised by the policy changes, the nationalist tone of the leaders, as well as Nepal’s dilemma of chasing both India and China.

In general, almost all Indian writers have agreed on the main idea that Balen Shah is a symbol of new and unconventional leadership in Nepal. That is why Indian commentators have expressed their view that it is important to change quickly according to the new political reality of Nepal.
