According to a survey by gfs.bern, almost everyone in Switzerland considers big tech companies to be purely profit-oriented, and at the same time, they expect the state, businesses, and users to take responsibility for ensuring that digitalization does not harm democracy and society.

However, the survey also showed that 90% of Swiss people want more protection for children and young people on social networks. In addition to this, 82% of Swiss people are concerned that Switzerland is becoming dependent on international big tech companies from China and the US. Therefore, 84% of people fear that too much political influence from these countries could be witnessed.

In the survey, 21% of respondents have very positive or somewhat positive views towards big tech companies. 40% of Swiss people have mixed views of these companies, and 38% see them as very or somewhat negative.

The Mercator Foundation Switzerland supported gfs.bern in conducting this survey.

In a similar survey by YouGov in 2025, it was found that the majority of people in France (63%) and Germany (59%) believe that the strict EU laws regulating big tech are still too lenient. However, in Spain, only 9% believe that the laws are too strict.

Around 58% of Swiss people see digitalization as positive or even very positive overall. In the same way, 53% believe that digitalization brings them personal benefits.

Swiss people believe that the state has a particular responsibility when it comes to dealing with AI. The percentage of people who believe that the state must ensure decisions made by AI and algorithms is 88%.
