Russia and China Veto UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz, Escalating Global Tensions

Bahrain presented a UN resolution encouraging states to coordinate efforts for protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In this resolution, 11 member countries voted in favor of the resolution while Russia and China vetoed and the remaining two were abstentions.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said that the draft resolution has not been adopted because of the vetoed by the two permanent members of the council.

Mike Waltz who is the US ambassador the UN has condemned the Russian and Chinese vetoes. He further added that, it marked a “new low” when Iran’s shutting of the strait and was preventing medical aid and supplies reaching humanitarian crises in the Congo, Sudan and Gaza.

China’s UN envoy FU Cong said that adopting such a draft is biased against Iran at a time when the US was threating the survival of a civilization.

Russia and China will be proposing an alternative resolution regarding Middle East and Maritime Security as stated by the Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya.

The key text of the resolution says, “urges de-escalation of the ongoing hostilities” and “return to the path of diplomacy.”

Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani by praising the Chinese and Russian moves had said that, through the efforts of Russia and China, “it prevents Security council from being misused to legitimize aggression.”

U.N. Secretary-General’s personal envoy was ​en route to Tehran to pursue consultations for peace but his travel plans largely would depend on security and logistics situation.

China and Russia are supporting the Iran’s war against Israel and the US in an indirect manner.
