Alaska Meeting: Light on Substance, Strong in Gestures

The much-awaited talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska (August 15, 2025), ended with no concrete outcomes. However, in posts on X (formerly Twitter), both leaders expressed hope for future progress.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “The conversation was frank and substantive which, in my view, moves us closer to making the necessary decisions.”

U.S. President Donald Trump stated, “A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO. It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often do not hold up. President Zelenskyy will be coming to D.C., to the Oval Office, on Monday afternoon. If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin. Potentially, millions of people’s lives will be saved. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

According to BBC reporting on the Trump–Putin meeting, a major press conference had been expected but was replaced by short statements. Putin emphasized that the “root causes” of the conflict must be addressed—underlining maximalist demands such as recognition of annexed territories, Ukrainian neutrality, and demilitarization—which Kyiv rejects. Trump, meanwhile, spoke of “great progress” but provided no concrete agreements. There was no announcement of a ceasefire, peace deal, or trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy. During the short statement, Putin said to Trump, ‘Next time in Moscow?’—a rare public use of English by him at the end of the joint press conference, inviting Trump to Moscow. Trump replied, ‘Ooh, that’s an interesting one.’
